When was the electric sign over Foothill Blvd. (formerly Minnehaha) at Glendora Ave. (formerly Michigan Ave.) installed and removed?

According to research conducted by the Glendora Library staff, the electric sign over Foothill Blvd. at Glendora Ave. was installed in 1922, and was taken down no later than the 1930’s.

Evidence was uncovered in various issues of the Glendora Gleaner, accessed through the Community Archive:

    • 4/22/1921: “The Chamber of Commerce notes that the committee had ‘made good progress on the electric sign over the boulevard. But it takes time to get these things completed. The city authorities are hard at work for improvement. You must remember the city’s business is done in addition to their own and is governed by requirements of law that necessarily cause delay, so just have patience, please, and keep boosting’”.
    • 7/1/1921: “City Council ‘finally adopted plans for the electric sign over the Boulevard and the committee has been instructed to proceed with the work of its creation.’”
    • 2/17/1922: “The work of erecting the electric sign over the Boulevard at Michigan avenue has been started, and in a short time the sign will be up. This will be a great boost for the Community.”
    • 2/2/1923: Reflecting back on the past year, the Chamber of Commerce notes the changes they have made including “completion of the electric sign over the Boulevard.”

Staff has been unable to find coverage in the Glendora Gleaner or other local newspapers regarding the removal of the sign. Given that there was so much coverage of the installation, it is possible a reference exists but our searches have yet to uncover anything. However, staff did locate an unverified photo on Pinterest with a 1930s caption, clearly showing that the intersection no longer contains the electric sign.

As published in The Glendora Press dated October 23, 1931, "the huge Glendora sign that has graced Foothill Boulevard for the past ten years went down this week when one of the supporting poles was removed to make way for the widening of Foothill Boulevard between Michigan and Vista Bonita." (The Glendora Press and Gleaner, October 17, 1941)
